Dir. Lorna Tucker | 2024 | 87 mins plus Q&A | English
Despite living in the world’s sixth-largest economy, over 300,000 people in the UK are still homeless. Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son is a heartbreaking but hopeful film from now-successful filmmaker Lorna Tucker, who was once a teenage runaway sleeping rough on the streets of London. For this frank, forceful and inspiring documentary, she returns to her former haunts and speaks to current and former homeless people about why, 25 years later, record numbers of people are still reduced to living on Britain’s streets.
The film will be followed by a Q&A with John Bird, co-founder of The Big Issue magazine. Born into a Notting Hill slum, he became homeless at age five, living in an orphanage and in his teens and twenties, spent several spells in prison. In 1991 he launched The Big Issue with Gordon Roddick, co-founder of The Body Shop, which has inspired over 100 street papers around the world. John became Baron Bird of Notting Hill In 2015. His work is non-partisan and focuses on dismantling the root causes of poverty in the UK, with an emphasis on early intervention and prevention.
This film is being shown as a fundraiser for Big Issue Frontline.
